The HUG showcases how community supported agriculture can transform marginalized urban spaces and demonstrates the power of partnerships across public, private, civic and non-profit communities.
In 2020 a volunteer project in collaboration with Habitabilidad22202 and sponsored by the BID de Aterrizaje Nacional, la Club Rotario de Crystal City-Pentágono, y el Arlington Departamento de Parques y Recreación del Condado was developed by FOUA as a model demonstration urban garden.
Located near Pentagon City in Virginia Parque de las Tierras Altas, the HUG revitalized an underused “marginalized” strip of land near the park’s tennis courts and illustrates how otherwise fallow spaces can be transformed into thriving, vibrant and abundant ecosystems!
The HUG engages visitors with information on the plants, techniques, and principles used to grow a mix of edible vegetative crops, pollinators, and local natives. As a pilot site, it serves as a model for future community supported agriculture projects throughout Arlington.
In 2025 the volunteer team celebrated its 5th year with an exciting permission from Arlington County to add a new area with 4 more beds almost doubling the original footprint.
