2026 Urban Agriculture Month

The Arlington County Board has proclaimed October 2026 Urban Agriculture Month, recognizing the many people and places that make local food part of life in Arlington. We are grateful to see urban agriculture celebrated across the County, from community and school gardens to residential spaces, rooftops, and indoor farms.

The proclamation recognizes that growing food is connected to much more than a harvest. Gardens create opportunities to learn, connect with nature, and share skills across generations. Local food systems also help our community prepare for challenges and expand access to nutritious food. Arlington’s farmers markets, community garden plots, food access programs, composting efforts, educators, and volunteers all contribute to that work.

We are especially honored that the proclamation recognizes Friends of Urban Agriculture and Plot Against Hunger. Through support for gardeners and gardens, farm gleaning, demonstration gardens, and produce donations, our volunteers and partners help bring locally grown food to neighbors through area food pantries.

Urban Agriculture Month is an invitation to take part. You might grow herbs on a windowsill, help at a garden, share produce from your harvest, or learn where your food comes from. Whether you have a large plot or a small container, there is a place for you in Arlington’s growing community.

Thank you to the County Board for this recognition—and to everyone who grows, teaches, volunteers, donates, and makes fresh food more accessible. We look forward to celebrating with you throughout October!
