October Urban Agriculture Month 2021 will be a celebration of the energy and dedication
of all who volunteer or work to advance urban agriculture in Arlington!

Oct 2: FOUA Urban Ag Appreciation Day To launch October Urban Ag Month, Friends of Urban Ag is hosting a day of appreciation for everyone who works or volunteers in gardens, farmers markets, food pantries, school gardens, community gardens, etc. Meet us outside at the Central Library Saturday, October 2 from 10:00am – 11:30am. County Board Members Matt de Ferranti and Libby Garvey will be there to present the County’s urban ag month proclamation. We want to thank YOU with refreshments, fun games, giveaways and more! Oct 6: Become a Master Gardener! Arlington County/City of Alexandria EMGs will be holding an Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Training Program Information Night on Wednesday October 6 at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom. The EMG program is one of many volunteer programs with which the Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) does community outreach, and we encourage you to learn more about VCE volunteer opportunities and offerings by checking our Arlington Extension page or our Alexandria Extension page. Oct 12 – 14: Mid-Atlantic Urban Agriculture Summit, October 12 – 14. Creating Healthy Communities Through Urban Agriculture Virginia Cooperative Extension is inviting urban farmers, gardeners, policymakers, government officials, foodies and other interested individuals from the mid-Atlantic region to participate in the virtual Summit. This year’s topics will include: Urban Agriculture and Food Security, Innovations in Urban Ag: Business, Technology, and Policy, and Urban Community Gardening. Details and registration here.

Oct 16: Open House at Plot Against Hunger Walter Reed Garden Saturday, October 16 10:00am – 12:00pm. Location: 2040 South Walter Reed Drive adjacent to Fort Barnard Community Garden. 

Oct 19: Healthy Communities Action Team (HCAT) Tuesday, October 19 11:00am. HCAT’s monthly meeting for October will feature speakers on school gardens, outdoor learning initiatives at APS, school meal nutrition standards and the farm to school program. FOUA will also share an update on produce donations through Rock Spring Church. Open to all. Register HERE.

Oct 23: Open House at Project HUG – Saturday, October 23, 10:00am – 12:00pm. Location: Virginia Highlands Park (1600 S Hayes St., Arlington, VA 22202) next to the tennis courts.

Oct 27 & Oct 30: How to Grow a School Garden Community Workshop in two parts

  • Wednesday, October 27, 7:00pm – 9:00pm  – virtual workshop – REGISTRATION
  • Saturday, October 30, 9:00am – 11:00am – Hoffman-Boston Elementary School Garden Demo – REGISTRATION

Visit the Organic Vegetable Demonstration Garden at Potomac Overlook Regional Park Any Wednesday in October from 8:30am – 10:30am. Location: 2845 N. Marcey Road, Arlington VA 22207

Extension Master Gardener Help Desk is open to the public!  Staffed daily between 9 and 12 pm, the Help Desk can answer questions about weeds, pest management and Identification, plant disease and identification of environmental or site management challenges to plant health. Located at the Fairlington Community Center 3308 S.
